Sam Concepcion enjoins students to save the environment

The Department of Education’s (DepEd) Youth Spokesperson and Role Model, Sam Concepcion, endorses “Husay ng Batang Pinoy 2009” - a nationwide Paper Clay Art Competition open to elementary and high school students.

Carrying the theme, “Ako Para sa Kalikasan,” the competition is a joint project of the DepEd and the JNBM Amazing Arts Philippines, Inc. (JAAPI), “Have a Heart for the Child Foundation.”

“Husay” is meant to encourage environment awareness through art -- specifically paper clay art.

Sam deems the contest timely for the year especially since some parts of the country are still reeling from the devastation wrought by Ondoy and Pepeng.

“Ondoy and Pepeng are a wake-up call for us. We haven’t really been taking care of our country.

“Sometimes we think that if we just throw garbage anywhere, it’s not gonna do any harm. But then if you put them [the trash] all together, it becomes bigger,” said he during the "Husay" press launch held at the Manila Ocean Park on Nov. 12.

The teen star believes that a small effort from everyone will make a big, collective impact on the betterment of our surroundings.

“These things happen---the typhoon and the flood---because of our own wrongdoings. If we can only turn those into positive, the small things we could do together will make a big difference,” Sam related.

Sam said the contest is apt in that the main medium used is the JAAPI’s PaperClay product, an indigenous invention made from recycled materials which are guaranteed safe and non-toxic.

“[And] it’s invented here, made of Filipino products,” Sam said proudly.

He encourages parents to join their children in the artistic endeavor.

“It’s a great bonding experience for the family because the goal is also for them to spend time together. It’s great both for kids and adults to share the creative process,” he said.

Has he dabbled into paper clay art?

“I tried it when I was smaller pa. My first creation was a Disney Character,” Sam recalled.

The 17-year-old performer hopes for “Husay” to foster in students the desire to excel in school.

“What DepEd aims for is to keep them [students] passionate with studying. To lessen the dropouts. For as long as you are in school---it doesn’t matter which one---what’s important is you finish your studies,” said he.

Division and regional selections among schools will culminate in the grand finals on Feb. 2010 to be held at the Manila Ocean Park. The grand winners from the elementary and high school levels will each receive 50,000 pesos.

Aside from showcasing the talents of Filipino children, the competition seeks to set a Guinness World Record for “Largest Paper Clay Art Competition participated by young Filipino artists.”

Sam, who is also a member of the Gigger Boys, has been DepEd’s spokesperson for two years now. He had since gone on a nationwide school tour to promote the value of education.

According to Sam he lives up to his title by striking a healthy balance between his career and studies. He is currently in Grade 10 under a home study program of the US-based Alpha Omega International School.

“Pahingi ng double-sided”, “Pahiram ng scissors”, “Nakakapagod naman Atéh!”, and “Gutom na ko!” are just some of the lines that you’ll hear inside the Social Studies Club officers’ working room. And that’s not all, you will find us in a preoccupied state. We are all busy that nobody would even dare to talk to you. And you’ll realize that we all look stressed out, ugly and austere. We don’t really work with grace under pressure!

Being excused from classes for the whole week was not all happiness and luck: it was hard work. Preparing for a big event like the United Nations was a roller coaster of emotions: frustrating, nauseating, tiring and traumatic. We missed a week’s worth of lessons and quizzes. And we were not able to enjoy the pageant itself because we still need to work until the program ended.

Well, the perks? We got to see the results first hand. We had backstage passes. And we were the brains behind all of it. Plus, working with new people was fun and memorable. The friendship and bond we had made within the four corners of the work room was something that was worth keeping. We shared laughter. We heard thoughts. We shed tears, both by disappointment and happiness. We almost gave up but never did. We worked all at the same time. We had fun. And, most of all, we learned: we learned to trust each other, to be optimistic, to always move forward, to accept mistakes, to be creative and to always be happy.

At the end of the day, we just realized that all our hard work paid off, that giving up was not the answer to all our problems, and that it was all worth it.

As for myself, I will miss the moments, the scare fest, the late hours of working, the jokes, the English, the hunger’s side effects, the work room, Ma’am Issa and her laptop, the stories, the ‘Babies’ (the first years), the rest of the officers and the experience itself.

I first met her last October 6 this year. She was a very cute, simple and smart student. We met during our meeting for a quiz bee. I got to work with her along with the other students from different years. We had fun during the contest proper. And I saw how smart she really was.

I grew quite fond of her. Though I rarely get to see her, though sometimes we just happen to bump into each other, I felt attached. She was just so adorable!

But they say life is unfair. And indeed it was. Just a month after her birthday, she died. (That’s why I’ve been using past tenses.) She was afflicted with Lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. And yes, she was still very young. She was just 12 years, 1 month and 1 day old. Her demise brought mourning and sadness and, of course, to her family. We learned that she still persuaded her mother to let her attend school, like what normal children do, even though she was aware that she was ill. Her passion and love for life and education made us realize that one’s life should be treasured, that education should be given priority, that we should make the very best out of every second that we live. She was an inspiration for most of us.

I sometimes ask why good people have to die so early, and why not perish the fugitives, criminals and riotous people. But then, everything has a reason. And God knows what the reason is. I just hope that He will bless her soul and continue to guide the family that she had left. May this thought bring hope, happiness and light again.

Condolences.

Happy November everyone! There is so much to do this month. Entrance exams, United Nations, senior scouts camping, Intramurals, Christmas Tree lighting, and yes, New Moon.

Like, God, I’m very much excited. I’m planning to read the book again, but I think I couldn’t, because I have so much to do, and so much to prepare for. Ugh. Good thing I took notes of the cheesy-but-memorable lines from the book, and I actually blogged about it on my Multiply before, maybe half a year ago already. Hahaha! Addicted, I know.

Here are some of them:

“You can have my soul. I don’t want it without you – it’s yours already!” – Bella.

“I’m here, and I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you. I was thinking of you, seeing your face in my mind, every second that I was away. When I told you I didn’t want you, it was the very blackest kind of blasphemy.” – Edward.

“Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars—points of light and reason… And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.” – Edward.

“You’re wounding my ego, Bella. I just proposed to you, and you think it’s a joke.” – Edward.

“If you stay, I don’t need heaven.” – Bella.

“You don’t have to be afraid. I won’t let them hurt you.” – Edward.

“You will always be the most beautiful thing in my world.” – Edward.

“My heart hasn’t beat in almost ninety years, but this was different.” – Edward.

I added new songs btw:
* Stutterin’ by Mario
* Up Up, Down Down by Krissy and Ericka

Have an ecstatic month everyone!
