American Idol Season 12
To be honest, I had doubts about this year’s
American Idol and its changes. Every time I saw their promotional teasers, I would be like, “Really? They’re doing that? I don’t think I’d see this.” The roster of the new judges is weird. Mariah Carey and Keith Urban are acceptable, but Nicki Minaj as a judge,
really? I was baffled at that idea that I thought the producers of the show must be nuts and are planning to pull the show down. But I guess I stand corrected.
I’m not saying I already love Nicki with all my heart, but so far she’s proving to be a good judge. The only thing I don’t like about her is her way of expressing her opinions. When she gets frustrated she either walks out or threatens to walk out. Either way, it’s not good for the show. It doesn’t demonstrate professionalism and it’s definitely awkward for everyone else, even the audience. You just don’t do that in a live show. But I don’t know, maybe the drama and the shallow feud between her and Mariah are just stunts to attract more viewers.
Anyway, I’m not actually here to be a judge to the judges, but to lay down my favorite
American Idol Season 12 contestants. I started doing this during Lee Dewyze’s time, and since then it has become a blogging tradition. This year, I only have five favorite contestants (one of them didn’t really make it to Top 10, but he’s just so fascinating he made it to my list).
Angela Miller. Angela is amazing, beautiful and quirky. What I love about her (including her wardrobe) is, of course, her voice: it’s whole (I don’t know the term) and doesn’t thin out when she takes on a high note; she doesn’t sound like a dying cockroach when she does her falsetto. Her voice is consistent. And I just love her even more when she sits behind her piano and go crazy with it – she’s like the female version of Colton Dixon, only she’s not really a rock star, but she is a star in her own right. (And her “Never Gone” cover was unquestionably a plus!)
Burnell Taylor. Unlike last year, the guy contestants this year are less stellar (and the girls are trampling on them every week), but an exception to that is Burnell. I didn’t notice him during his audition, but geez, that voice is just so good! I like his simplicity and that he doesn’t move around the stage a lot; he just stands there behind the microphone and moves his hands like a conductor and
bam! He’s effortless. His voice is just a tone away from becoming a wrecked and annoying falsetto, but he just hit it right. And his nerdy look doesn’t hurt.
Kree Harrison. The first thing I noticed about Kree is her beauty – she’s just stunning. The features of her face are striking. And then she sang… and what the heck, she’s
perfect. (And she has pretty shoes, if I may add.) If she just perform amazingly every week, she could actually –
yo, yo dawg! – win this thing.
Charlie Askew. Charlie didn’t actually make it to Top 10, either because his Top 20 performance was all-out weird and scary so he lost some of his admirers or because he just doesn’t have enough admirers. But I’m one of them (but I couldn’t vote so screw me), and his cute eccentricity is what I like about him. I hope his weirdness will make him a star someday. Weird is special.
Amber Holcomb. One cool thing about Amber: she sings like she’s only sleeping. When she sings and belts out a ridiculous high note, it looks like she’s not doing anything. She remains cool, intact and smiling. She reminds me so much of Kurt (Chris Colfer) of
Glee: they both sing like they’re not…
singing. They’re aliens. It’s like Amber is from the Singing Planet of G-Clefs or the Do-Re-Mi World. She’s out-of-this-world. She would need a lot of supporters to –
yo, yo dawg! – win this all the way through. (Plus: she has legs that could save the world.)
If I would compare this year’s bunch of aspirants to last year’s, I’d say Season 11 was better. Not that I’m insinuating that Angela and the others are not good (because they are), but collectively, the peeps from last year are way better and more entertaining. This year lacks
diversity: the contestants almost have the same genre and same tone, like when you listen to them and close your eyes, you wouldn’t be able to distinguish who from who. Unlike Phillip Phillips time, they have their signature voice; they had singers for jazz, acoustic, rock, pop, country and everything else. This year doesn’t.
I just hope whoever –
yo, yo dawg! – wins this thing is the most deserving. We don’t want a flop, right?

Profile
Already several months had passed, and I am missing
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry more and more each fleeting day. There are just some things in life that we can never forget – especially that something that had given us knowledge, skills, strong relationships and a second home. I am glad that everything in the magical world is now at peace, since Voldemort (yes, I can now say his name; no need to be afraid) had died. I had secretly admired Tom Marvolo Riddle (Voldemort’s birth name) though, because of his intelligence, passion and love for magic. Wasn’t he very clever to think of and conjure his seven
Horcruxes to preserve his life, or form a clan of
Death Eaters who were very loyal to him and would give up their lives just for him to succeed? Not everybody can acquire that much loyalty from people these days. I do not, however, admire him for the way he had carried out all of his plans. He had a good agenda, his means just weren’t morally right. But he still is one of the darkest wizards of all time… and let’s leave it that way.
Oh, for all those who are baffled of what I’m saying here and who the heck I am, my name is
Christine Faye Ordas, and I am an alumnus of Hogwarts. I came from the bronze-and-blue-clad house of the smart ass witch Rowena Ravenclaw and her dictum
“Wit beyond measure is a man’s greatest treasure.” And yes, I know the wonderful Luna Lovegood (she’s such a darling) and Harry Potter’s first crush Cho Chang. I had just left Hogwarts last May. Right now I am trying to pursue a career in magical researches, literature and writing. It’s my dream to inscribe intellectual books, publish and sell them in
Flourish and Blotts for the future Hogwarts students’ use. I am also planning to credibly write for the
Daily Prophet, the magical world’s primary news bulletin. And of course, I will be very much honored to contribute to Mr. Xenophilius Lovegood’s
Quibbler (hence, my interest in magical researches). I have always found the Lovegoods a fascinating family, and I bet working with and for them will be very exciting. Or maybe, in Merlin’s beard’s time, I can write legends and bedtime stories like the famous – and wickedly brilliant – Beedle the Bard.
And that’s how my life goes these days. I am utterly missing my old school, my friends, the Great Hall, the bronze eagle knocker just outside the Ravenclaw common room, Professor Flitwick (the head of our house), Hogsmeade, the Quidditch matches (although I didn’t actually play for the house), the moving portraits, the castle ghosts, the pumpkins on Halloween, the giant pine trees on Christmas, Rubeus Hagrid’s (Hogwarts’ gamekeeper) tea and treacle fudge – even the crabby Argus Filch (Hogwarts’ caretaker) I miss. Maybe I can visit the school grounds sometimes and see how the magical world’s been doing since Voldemort died (I’ve been spending my months in the muggle world, you see). I’ve heard everybody’s been moving on and starting all over again; the ministry is back on work under Kingsley Shacklebolt; and Harry Potter’s scar haven’t been disturbing him since.
All is well, indeed.
And because of that, we should celebrate and drink firewhisky! Oh, I still don’t drink firewhisky; I can take butterbeer or tea or pumpkin juice – just not firewhisky, please.
