I first met her last October 6 this year. She was a very cute, simple and smart student. We met during our meeting for a quiz bee. I got to work with her along with the other students from different years. We had fun during the contest proper. And I saw how smart she really was.

I grew quite fond of her. Though I rarely get to see her, though sometimes we just happen to bump into each other, I felt attached. She was just so adorable!

But they say life is unfair. And indeed it was. Just a month after her birthday, she died. (That’s why I’ve been using past tenses.) She was afflicted with Lupus, a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. And yes, she was still very young. She was just 12 years, 1 month and 1 day old. Her demise brought mourning and sadness and, of course, to her family. We learned that she still persuaded her mother to let her attend school, like what normal children do, even though she was aware that she was ill. Her passion and love for life and education made us realize that one’s life should be treasured, that education should be given priority, that we should make the very best out of every second that we live. She was an inspiration for most of us.

I sometimes ask why good people have to die so early, and why not perish the fugitives, criminals and riotous people. But then, everything has a reason. And God knows what the reason is. I just hope that He will bless her soul and continue to guide the family that she had left. May this thought bring hope, happiness and light again.

Condolences.
