The Department of Education’s (DepEd) Youth Spokesperson and Role Model, Sam Concepcion, endorses “Husay ng Batang Pinoy 2009” - a nationwide Paper Clay Art Competition open to elementary and high school students.

Carrying the theme, “Ako Para sa Kalikasan,” the competition is a joint project of the DepEd and the JNBM Amazing Arts Philippines, Inc. (JAAPI), “Have a Heart for the Child Foundation.”

“Husay” is meant to encourage environment awareness through art -- specifically paper clay art.

Sam deems the contest timely for the year especially since some parts of the country are still reeling from the devastation wrought by Ondoy and Pepeng.

“Ondoy and Pepeng are a wake-up call for us. We haven’t really been taking care of our country.

“Sometimes we think that if we just throw garbage anywhere, it’s not gonna do any harm. But then if you put them [the trash] all together, it becomes bigger,” said he during the "Husay" press launch held at the Manila Ocean Park on Nov. 12.

The teen star believes that a small effort from everyone will make a big, collective impact on the betterment of our surroundings.

“These things happen---the typhoon and the flood---because of our own wrongdoings. If we can only turn those into positive, the small things we could do together will make a big difference,” Sam related.

Sam said the contest is apt in that the main medium used is the JAAPI’s PaperClay product, an indigenous invention made from recycled materials which are guaranteed safe and non-toxic.

“[And] it’s invented here, made of Filipino products,” Sam said proudly.

He encourages parents to join their children in the artistic endeavor.

“It’s a great bonding experience for the family because the goal is also for them to spend time together. It’s great both for kids and adults to share the creative process,” he said.

Has he dabbled into paper clay art?

“I tried it when I was smaller pa. My first creation was a Disney Character,” Sam recalled.

The 17-year-old performer hopes for “Husay” to foster in students the desire to excel in school.

“What DepEd aims for is to keep them [students] passionate with studying. To lessen the dropouts. For as long as you are in school---it doesn’t matter which one---what’s important is you finish your studies,” said he.

Division and regional selections among schools will culminate in the grand finals on Feb. 2010 to be held at the Manila Ocean Park. The grand winners from the elementary and high school levels will each receive 50,000 pesos.

Aside from showcasing the talents of Filipino children, the competition seeks to set a Guinness World Record for “Largest Paper Clay Art Competition participated by young Filipino artists.”

Sam, who is also a member of the Gigger Boys, has been DepEd’s spokesperson for two years now. He had since gone on a nationwide school tour to promote the value of education.

According to Sam he lives up to his title by striking a healthy balance between his career and studies. He is currently in Grade 10 under a home study program of the US-based Alpha Omega International School.
