The Hunger Games (2008) is a young-adult science fiction novel written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published in hardcover on September 14, 2008 by Scholastic. It is the first book of the Hunger Games trilogy. It introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world where a powerful government called the Capitol has risen up after several devastating disasters. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the ruthless and evil Capitol randomly selects one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts, who are then pitted against each other in a game of survival and forced to kill until only one remains. ©

I first learned about The Hunger Games through a local weekly newspaper. They had featured this book and did some survival lessons and so for teens. I’ve been eyeing this for a couple of months already, but couldn’t purchase one because of its price. It is expensive, really. But I was lucky because someone had given me a copy as a graduation gift. Thank You Zandro!

The plot was one of a kind, and the way Collins writes is superb. It was fast-paced, and you won’t get bored while reading it. I didn’t have enough sleep because of this. I started reading it last Sunday night and ended by Wednesday afternoon. It was a combination of action and romance. I love Peeta Mellark to death! I like how Collins thought of their names: Katniss Everdeen, Primrose Everdeen, Rue, Cinna, Haymitch Abernathy. Cool. But I hate that it’s open-ended. I’m aching to get my hands on the second book.

Just a simple piece of advice: don’t ever start reading Hunger Games if you don’t have the second book yet. The book itself says that you should buy Catching Fire immediately. Agitation kills. And I learned that it is now a trilogy. Mockingjay will be out by August of 2010. Wow. I love mockingjays, they’re cute and somewhat annoying, but still adorable. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy.

And oh, may the odds be ever in your favor!
